As soon as the leaves begin to change colors and the clock strikes midnight on the first of October, the desire to watch something spooky fills the air. Although it can be challenging to find a family friendly Halloween movie,K&S Car Wash is here to the rescue with five movies that the entire family can stream and watch either on Netflix, Hulu, or both.

Girl vs. Monster (2012)

Streaming On: Netflix Girl vs. Monster premiered on the Disney Channel in 2012. It’s a TV-PG rated flick that stars Olivia Holt, Kerris Dorsey, and Brendan Meyers. In this film, Olivia Holt is the daughter of Monster Hunters. She is a fearless girl who loves to sing and doesn’t let anyone stand in her way. There are lots of ghosts and spirits that feed on the fears of members of the town and while this movie was made for tweens, it has a message that can speak to anyone of any age. The movie talks about facing your fears and being a true friend. This movie is great for children who can handle minor scares. It’s TV-PG but very young children may find the monsters frightening.

E.T. the extraterrestrial (1982)

Streaming On: Netflix Directed by everyone’s favorite director, Steven Spielberg, E.T. the extraterrestrial made its debut in the beginning of the ’80s. It was one of Drew Barrymore’s first films and featured Peter Coyote and Henry Thomas. A perennial favorite and some of the inspiration for the Hit Netflix series Stranger Things, this movie is the quintessential ’80s film. It even features a much talked about scene where E.T. sees a child dressed as what might be a good friend Yoda. You may remember Yoda from the Star Wars films. This movie is great for families with young children of all ages. It’s PG, but does feature some tween kid situations.

Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest (2013)

Streaming On: Hulu Curious George has been a favorite of children the world over since his debut in the 1939 in the books by H. A. Rey and Margret Rey. While the shows aim at younger children, parents and adults will still enjoy seeing George get into the spooky Halloween themed mystery of “No Noggin.” In this movie George and his friend Allie research the legend of No Noggin, a scarecrow that steals the hats of people who pass-by during the Halloween season. This movie is great for people of all ages and reinforces the skills of deductive reasoning without feeling too much like an educational show. This movie aired on PBS so it should be acceptable for all children.

The Addams Family (1991)

Streaming On: Netflix and Hulu The original creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky Addams Family won the Best Horror Film of 1991 from the Horror Hall of Fame for its all-star casted movie portrayal of the classic goth clan. While the movie didn’t have the highest of score from either Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB, the movie is still a classic that all members of the family can enjoy. Not to mention it features some wonderful acting by the late Raul Julia. What makes this movie great for both adults and children is that it shows that family will always come together regardless of the circumstances. This movie is perfect for children who can handle slight adult circumstances, as Morticia and Gomez Addams engage in a lot of marital kissing and hugging. It is rated PG-13 so use your own discretion to decide if this movie is appropriate for your child.

Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Streaming On: Netflix Nightmare Before Christmas has a lot of teen and adult fans and while most of the movie focuses on Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, and his obsessive desire to become the new Santa Claus, the movie is still perfect for the Halloween season and the Christmas season. The movie focuses on Jack Skellington, Sally, and the other colorful members of Halloween Town and their take on the Christmas holiday. The reason this movie transcends childhood and works for both adults and children is because it focuses on themes everyone can identify with, like belonging and making a holiday fit your own culture. This movie is rated PG and while the movie directed at children, be wary that some children may find the citizens of Halloween Town and their gimmicks to be a little frightening.
